Beadmakers meet in Ripa
Skilled glass beadmakers from Denmark and abroad gather in Ribe VikingeCenter to exchange experiences and not least to showcase their amazing art. From lumps of red-hot glass heated to 1100 degrees in small clay ovens, they will make lovely glass beads using very simple tools. It's pure magic!
The beadmakers in Viking Age Ribe
The archaeologists have found several traces of beadmakers' workshops in the Viking Age marketplace. Most of them were small and temporary, but there was also at least one large permanent workshop. Foreign merchants brought the raw material (glass mosaics) to Ribe, and the glass beadmakers worked with different colour combinations.
